Meet the Team: Beth Cole

What do you do at NASH Maritime?

I’m currently undertaking a GIS analysis internship within the Data Team at NASH Maritime. My role focuses onvessel traffic data, working with AIS datasets both in GIS software and programmatically, to support maritime infrastructure development projects. Each study has its own unique requirements, so we tailor our data processing toextract exactly what’s needed for navigation risk assessments.

What drew you to working in this area?

During my degree, I worked on geospatial projects like bathymetric surveys around the Solent and tracking loggerhead turtles via GPS. I loved working with large datasets to uncover meaningful insights, and this internship offered the perfect opportunity to build on those skills. There isn’t always a straightforward university path into maritime consultancy, so being able to learn directly from NASH’s experienced team, who bring a wide range of marine expertise, has been an incredibly valuable part of my development.

What kind of studies are you currently involved in?

I’ve supported several studies, including a nearshore traffic assessment around the Thames. That project used machine learning to identify vessels without AIS transmitters, which was fascinating to see in action. An exciting moment was seeing a plot I created featured on a Notice to Mariners within my first few weeks. Being trusted with real-world work so early on has been incredibly motivating.

What’s your favourite thing about the work you do?

The dynamic nature of the work. Every project is different, and we’re constantly evolving our methods, whether it’s automating manual processes or training AI models. Innovation is encouraged, and it’s rewarding to see your ideas implemented and making a real impact.

How does the work you do support NASH Maritime’s vision of safe and sustainable seas or belief in better?

Geospatial analysis is central to everything we do. Understanding vessel movement patterns helps us assess future scenarios and inform decisions that enhance safety at sea. Accurate data and clear communication are key to building better systems and safe sustainable solutions.

What do you like best about working here?

The culture of support and collaboration. I’ve had regular check-ins to shape my development and choose the kinds of tasks I want to explore. Workload is managed thoughtfully, and if a task grows unexpectedly, there’s always someone ready to help. Being part of APEM Group also means access to a wider network of expertise and opportunities.

What phrase or word sums up NASH Maritime for you?

Dynamic.
There’s always something new happening; techniques evolving, projects launching, and ideas flowing. It’s an exciting place to start a maritime career.
