Assessing impact of the first Welsh floating offshore wind farm

Blue Gem Wind Ltd, a joint venture between TotalEnergies and Simply Blue Group, is developing floating offshore wind sites in Welsh Waters of the Celtic Sea.

The first demonstration site is the 96 MW Erebus Project approximately 44 km southwest of the Pembrokeshire coastline. When constructed in 2026 it will become the largest floating offshore wind project.

Our work

NASH Maritime formed part of the team of EIA specialists led by ITPE Limited and MarineSpace, leading on assessing the impact from the project on shipping and navigation.

Our assessment investigated the potential effects of the WindFloat™ floating wind platform on shipping and navigational safety through construction, operation and decommissioning of the wind farm.

This included deploying a survey vessel to conduct a radar, AIS and visual vessel traffic survey, wide spread stakeholder engagement with marine users and cutting edge vessel traffic analysis and modelling to a detailed Navigation Risk Assessment (NRA).

In December 2021, Blue Gem Wind submitted its application for consent to build and operate the Erebus floating offshore wind project.
